In the 17th Century clocks and watches were set according to the sun time as shown by sun dials and it was not uncommon to find sun dials built on the lids of early 17th. Century oval cases. Towards the end of the 17th Century astronomers introduced "mean sun time" which was an average length of all "true sun days" and clocks and watches were now set to this mean time. Equation watches are very rare - showing both mean and true sun time simultaneously. Henry Sully is often credited with the construction of the first equation watch in the late 17th. Century. The connection and variable time relationship between sun and mean time is achieved in item #59 by the use of an elliptical or kidney-shaped disc which attaches to the mean year disc. Equation of time watches were made by the most famous watchmakers of all time including Ellicott, Berthoud and A. L. Breguet. $22,550.00

He then established himself in New York doing repair work and making his own 3/4 plate movements with lever and detent escapements. In 1861, he went to Cuba where he continued his work adding new repeater designs and a duplex escapement to his repertoire. He took out his first escapement patent in 1868 when he returned to New York and later moved to the West staying in Minneapolis for a short time and possibly Milwaukee, by 1870 he settled in Chicago. In 1872 his brother, William Cleveland Potter, organized the firm Potter Brothers. This firm was dissolved in 1875. In that year, Potter took out patents on compensation balances and improvements in escapements for watches. His watches were quickly considered to be masterpieces of the art of horology. A chronometer built by him became a prototype which was shown in Geneva in 1876. He also made complicated tourbillon escapements and minute repeaters. Potter took a patent in 1886 for an escapement without an escape wheel which was first invented by Deshay in 1825 and introduced again by Mac Dowell at a London exposition in 1855. This patent along with others pertaining to the Charmilles watch was assigned to the New Haven Watch Co.
