The inner gold cuvette is signed “Matthey Jeantet Locle.” The spectacular 40 jewel two-train nickel bridge movement is also signed and numbered. It features a lever escapement with a counterpoised pallet fork and a steel escape wheel. The porcelain dial is signed and is centered by Breguet moon hands and a center sweep hand. The 1/4-second jump hand appears at the 6 o’clock position. The porcelain dial is marked with Roman chapters, a black minute track and outer second marks along with 5-second numerals.

This spectacular and rare timepiece features a very unique case which has an April 1858 patent trademark from Baldwin & Co. inside the back lid. The case consists of the usual flip-open back lid and front bezel as well as an interior reversible case which rotates so that it transforms from an open face-style to a hunters case-style. The case is finished with an uninitialed crest on the outer back cover and a reeded pattern along the outer edges. The double sunk Roman dial is signed “J. & J. Hargreaves Liverpool 10903.” The lever fusee movement is set with fifteen ruby jewels and a compensated balance. The total weight of this fine collector’s item is 94 dwts.

This fine example comes with circular damaskeening, it carries blue spade pointers and a very rare double sunk dial which is signed “Abbot Sure Time.” The dial is marked with Roman chapters and red 5-minute numerals. The exquisite case features two small birds set aside a floral garland and a central crest. Wonderful honeycomb patterns appear in the background areas and a series of leaf, swirl and flower designs can be found on both sides.

It also features a high-quality bi-metallic balance wheel with solid gold timing screws. The mechanism is signed “Appleton Tracy & Co. Waltham Mass.” At center, the movement is signed “1865 Fogg’s Safety Pinion Patent.”

Roman hour chapters and blue spade pointers mark the single sunk porcelain dial which fronts this rare American keywind 7 jewel movement. The gilt movement is signed “Geo. W. Waite Hide Park, Ill.” The movement features a nicely engraved single footed balance bridge and a 3-arm uncut steel balance wheel. The 3 oz. coin silver case is embellished with flower ornaments on the upper/lower areas and an uninitialed crest which appears on the front cover.

Cornell Watch Co. emerged from the Newark Watch Co. It moved to San Francisco, California in 1874. The production numbers for this scarce American factory are extremely low. This particular George Waite Hide Park model is very rare. It was produced in the 1870 to 1874 period when the Cornell Watch Co. was in Chicago, Ill. At that time, the production numbers totaled only approximately 12,000 watches.

The Ball screw back/bezel railroad case is plain polished on the back and finished with swirl patterns along the outer edges, it features the original stirrup-style bow. Extremely rare and unique, this Model 83 nickel movement is marked “17 Jewels Adjusted.” It features the Canadian Pacific railway shield and beaver trademark on the main plate. The movement is beautifully damaskeened with screw down gold jewel settings. The double hinged back case is engraved with a farmer and two horses pulling his plow. This central design is bordered by leaf and flower decorations. The ultra-rare dial is double sunk and signed “A. W. W. Co. Waltham” above the seconds bit. Arabic chapters and red 5-minute numerals mark the dial. A full colored highly detailed locomotive scene appears at the center of the dial, the coal car is signed “Horton.”

Fred & Harold Malkin who were young men who headed for Canada’s Northwest territory at the early ages of 21 and 16 in 1884. They settled in Vancouver and initialed a wholesale grocery business titled “W. H. Malkin Co. Wholesale Grocers Tea Blenders & Coffee Roasters.” The company went on to make preserves, pickles and spices which were known as Malkin’s best. They became the premier grocery business in the city. Eventually as the family business prospered, they became leaders in the community. They then moved to a new residential district which was home to many of the prominent Bank and Trust Company presidents as well as officials of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Prominent lawyers and milling cannery owners also took up residence in this new west end section of Vancouver. As they were building fabulous Victorian mansions, it was common at this time for each house to receive a special name. When Fred Malkin married Julia Eldridge, he built a house for himself and his young wife which overlooked English Bay and the house was called “Horton”. The Horton name supposedly was derived from the Edge and Sestro residences in Staffordshire. This rare American timepiece presented in the Ashland catalog is most likely Fred Malkin’s own personal watch and truly a one-of-a-kind piece!

The cylinder fusee movement carries a porcelain dial with fancy open work hands and Arabic numerals. The dial is marked with a black minute track and is signed “Breguet a Paris” at the lower area. The nickel bridge movement features twenty-five ruby jewels, it is jeweled through the repeat hammers and is controlled by a straight line lever escapement. The inner cuvette is gold and is signed “Repetition Demichronomtre 25 Rubis.” When the inner rose-gold dust cover is lifted open there is an interior enameled pattern showing an Alpine mountain and village scene in black and white coloration. A very highly colorful polychrome scene of an amorous couple is also shown and the gentleman depicts high excitement whenever the repeat function is activated. The porcelain dial is finished with Roman chapters and is centered by gold filigree hands.

#60. SWISS RARE TOURBILLION KEYWIND POCKET WATCH

Exceedingly rare, this is a very early and a very unique small size tourbillion keywind. The half plate gilt movement features fusee and chain setup and a 1-minute tourbillion carriage which is supported by a ruby endstone and a steel 3-arm center frame. The escapement is an ultra high-quality side Massey-style lever escapement which is jeweled with rubies on the escape wheel pivots. The 1-minute tourbillion carries a beautiful silver dial decorated with a sunburst pattern at center and marked with Roman chapters and Breguet blue steel moon hands. The original case is engine turned on both sides and decorated with a textured pattern on the center rim. A small uninitialed circular frame appears on the front cover.
